Plastipak’s Sustainability Goals Get Green Light from SBTi
November 12, 2024
As a global leader in the design, manufacturing, and recycling of plastic containers, Plastipak continues to pave the way in sustainability efforts in the plastics industry. We’re proud to share the next step in our path toward a more sustainable future — the approval of our near-term emissions reduction targets by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi).
SBTi is a collaborative climate action organization that supports businesses in their efforts to set science-based emissions reduction targets. Their confirmation of Plastipak’s emissions reduction goals reaffirms our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental footprint and mitigating climate change via both short- and long-term solutions.
Plastipak’s Emissions Reduction Goals
Plastipak’s SBTi-approved goals will require continued effort to cut emissions across operations and throughout the supply chain. Plastipak’s specific targets validated and approved by SBTi are as follows:
- Scope 1 & 2 Emissions: Plastipak commits to a 59.7% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 2032.
- Scope 3 Emissions: Plastipak pledges a 32.5% reduction in absolute Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions over the same time frame.
Note: All target boundaries include land-related emissions and removals from bioenergy feedstocks. From a 2019 baseline.
Understanding Scope 1, 2, and 3 Emissions
Plastipak’s goals revolve around Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, each of which are critical to reduce our environmental impact. The three categories of emissions that companies measure include the following:
- Scope 1: Direct emissions from sources owned or controlled by Plastipak, such as emissions from onsite fuel combustion, company vehicles, or industrial processes. For Plastipak, this includes emissions directly resulting from our manufacturing activities.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from energy that Plastipak purchases, principally electricity bought by Plastipak to power our facilities.
- Scope 3: All other indirect emissions that occur throughout the Plastipak value chain. Scope 3 includes emissions from the production or transportation of raw materials, along with post-purchase emissions such disposal or recycling of Plastipak products by consumers. Scope 3 emissions often represent the largest share of a company’s carbon footprint and are challenging to manage as they involve suppliers, customers, and broader industry networks.
Committed to a Greener Future
With the recent SBTi approval, Plastipak will continue to work toward its 2032 goals while continuing our research and investment into new lower-carbon technologies and materials to minimize our impact. Plastipak’s determination to reduce our environmental footprint is powered by our Packaging the Future campaign, a company-wide initiative that encourages the incorporation of sustainable business practices into everyday operations and the creation of positive change in the communities in which we operate.
Alongside the reduction of our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, Plastipak is making strides in our efforts to reduce energy consumption, increase the use of Post Consumer recycled HDPE and PET materials, and expand our Green and Clean energy consumption. Through these initiatives and continued progress, Plastipak is making an active contribution to the effort to limit global warming. We encourage our partners and industry leaders to continue working alongside us to protect our planet.
